I would be genuinely interested to know what was behind that (by their standards) exceptional TUSC performance in Bolsover Probably mainstream Socialists who consider a Corbyn led Labour party too extreme

It's an LD win, pretty sure. Conservative votes will favour LDs.

David does have a point, but 78 votes is often better than they manage in much bigger divisions. So it is still interesting, and I wonder if anybody has any info.

I'm reeling. Stunning gain and not expected either. Why not? It's a new MP's council seat in a parliamentary seat that was gained from us. Seems to be a bit of a pattern... That's three like that now isn't it? Got to love any gain from Nats.

David is correct: Bolsover South is a small ward in a small town with a sleepy local political culture and turnout was beyond abysmal. You could try to draw sweeping conclusions from the result, but it would probably be better if someone splashed your face with copious amounts of cold water. The TUSC candidate polled a double digit share when he ran in the Bolsover NW ward four years ago, incidentally. Presumably he's well known in the town.

One of the Respect triumphs at local elections came in 2007 in Shirebrook North West ward. The reason seems to have been nothing to do with popularity of the candidate or particular effectiveness of campaigning; it was a ward that had been unopposed for donkey's years and the local Labour Party wasn't used to having to fight it. Four years later and it was easily recaptured.

307 Conservative transfers to the LD's against 23 Conservative transfers to the SNP. Very good transfer rate for the LD's.

It's the first really positive result the Lib Dems have had in Scotland (I was going to say since May, but in reality for a lot longer). In most other by-elections since May they've slid further back. A very good result for them. Any revival they have in Scotland looks like it will start in the Highlands.
