So 40% cant be arsed to turnout in a vote billed as a referendum on independence.
Good start.

The Graun seem to be wetting themselves about this. Curiously the line of "we shouldn't have to subsidise poorer regions" is going down well at Grauniad Towers.

That is what the SNP have being arguing for the last 45 years. Especially with oil nudging $50 a barrel. Hang on there is a flaw in that argument......

And not quite 50% of the vote on a t/out of 63%. Not really a mandate is it?

No. But it won't stop them, just like defeat didn't stop the SNP

I'm glad they didnt get too near 50%, and slightly bemused that the separatists are still claiming that 47% is a mandate for UDI, lol!

Realistically the only sensible way forward would be for the Spanish and Catalan Governments to negotiate terms for a legally binding referendum.

Wont a legally binding referendum require a change to the Spainish constitution?
The loser in this is Mas isn't it? . The Yes side, like the SNP with every event in their favour seem to have blown this.

The EU doesnt negotiate with seceeding states it starts negotiations when they are independent. Made quite clear in the Scottish referendum.

And not quite 50% of the vote on a t/out of 63%. Not really a mandate is it? Its not a ringing endorsement of the union, and the parties favouring UDI got just under 50% of the vote, parties backing a referendum on it got around 11% - with probably at least 50% of the people supporting them wanting independence.
