I've just discovered that there are a few old election leaflets in a collection of online material associated with the Walkley Action Group. Cyril Morton, Communist candidate for Park ward, 1968: leaflet. He came fourth with 5%. Geoff Green, Independent candidate for Walkley ward, 1969: poster, leaflet p1, leaflet p2. This was the campaign which started the Action Group. He came third with 17%, not a bad performance for an Independent in Sheffield. The Kelvin development criticised in the leaflet is long demolished; the Carr Road houses are almost all still there. Ivor Wakley, Conservative candidate for Hillsborough ward, 1970: leaflet. He won with 56% of the vote. Irvine Patnick, Conservative candidate for Sheffield Hillsborough, 1970 general election: leaflet. Of course he was later MP for Hallam.

Irvine Patnick, Conservative candidate for Sheffield Hillsborough, 1970 general election: leaflet. Of course he was later MP for Hallam. Thank you for sharing these YL. Irvine Patnick was also leader of the opposition for South Yorkshire council in the interim, without any hope of achieving power. When Mrs. Thatcher asked him how he coped with such a hopeless situation, he replied "You have to treat it as a joke. If you took it seriously you would get terribly upset."

People are always surprised when I tell them Hillsborough Ward used to be solidly Conservative. And Beauchief, and Broomhill, and Ecclesall, and Hallam, and Nether Edge...

"Hooley for Heeley" is a fantastic slogan.

I intentionally didn't list Dore and Totley as, unlike the other wards, it's "only" 7 years since there was a Conservative councillor there and I don't think people are surprised that it used to be solidly Conservative.

Astonishing that you probably finished third there in the GE.

Astonishing that you probably finished third there in the GE. Perhaps one day the local association will decide to be a campaigning organisation rather than a social club. As losing Hallam and all councillors in the city didn't convince them of the need to change I'm not holding my breath.

A couple of years ago some CFers from the Uni and I considered a takeover but we thought we'd not manage it. I think finishing third may have been people backing Clegg but it sets a worrying precedent.

People are always surprised when I tell them Hillsborough Ward used to be solidly Conservative. And Beauchief, and Broomhill, and Ecclesall, and Hallam, and Nether Edge... Most of those feel like areas which could be Tory, and indeed would be in other parts of the country, though. Hillsborough doesn't really, outside the odd pocket. If the Hallam Lib Dem machine were to collapse Rochdale-style, you'd surely get Dore & Totley and Fulwood back, possibly Ecclesall too, and be getting decent shares in Crookes (& Crosspool) and Stannington. The parliamentary seat might be a Lab/Con marginal!

There's definitely a market for Tory votes in Stannington.
