75 years ago today, Buckingham Palace was bombed in an air-raid. If the German bombers had succeeded in killing the King and Queen and the two princesses (as they presumably would have preferred to do, if possible), then:
we would have had King Henry IX from 1940 to 1974; we would now be in the reign of King Richard IV; the Prince of Wales (Prince William) would have died in a plane crash in 1972; we would have celebrated the 100th birthday of the Queen Mother on 25th December 2001.

We had a Richard of Gloucester on the throne once before, of course.
Doubtful if the Prince of Wales would have been allowed to go off and fly in air races (I assume you saw the recent documentary about Prince William of Gloucester).

No I didn't actually, but thanks for reminding me. I will go and see if I can find it before I forget.

An alternative possibility from the 1930s & 40s is if King Edward VIII had done his duty, abandoned Mrs Simpson, and given priority to his duties as King, instead of allowing himself to be led astray by an American divorcée. Then, we would have a thread here about an Alternative History in which, instead of reigning as King until 1972 (and being succeeded by his neice), he would have abdicated and the Duke of York would have unexpectedly become King and we would now have Queen Elizabeth II with an unlikely very long reign of 68 years instead of "only" 48.

I read an amusing alternative history once where JFK survived the assassination attempt, but conspiracy theorists claimed he had been killed and a doppelganger installed in his place.

No, he went back in time, and became the gunman behind the grassy knoll.
