This actually arises from an enquiry we had at work last week. Does anyone know where I can find local election results for Darlaston from the nineteenth century, during the era of the Local Board and latterly the start of the UDC? Would be very useful for someone doing local history research if I could pass these on, but I was unable to find them online anywhere.

The first election of the UDC was on Monday 17 December, and there were twenty seats and thirty candidates. It's Mr Enoch Horton we were particularly interested in. He was also the Liberal candidate for the Wednesbury constituency in 1900, losing to the Tories by just 175 votes. However, he seems to have been involved in Darlaston politics for some time. He was elected to the School Board in the 1860s.

Local Records Office?
The Minutes should be lodged somewhere.
Having said that, the early election results for Church Minshull Parish Council resided in my spare bedroom for some years.

He's proving a bit elusive but his obituary in 1905 says he was a member of the Staffordshire county council and he was certainly present at the meeting in 1870 which decided how many members (twelve or twenty) the new authority was to have - they voted to have twenty. In 1884 and 1885 he was summonsed to court to show why he should not contribute money for the upkeep of the illegitimate child of one Annie Stagg who had been one of his servants.
oh, and he was definitely Chair of the Local Board in 1892-3.

Walsall Council Archives ought to have inherited Darlaston's records, so that's the natural place to start if that hasn't already been ticked off. I don't know about archives in a met boro, but in my experience county archives are usually more than happy to give researchers access to their collections, because they're often sadly under-utilised.
On a related note, I'm currently putting in an application to do some volunteering at Cambridgeshire County Archives. Some of their records aren't publicly accessible due to their impending move, but if there is anything anybody wants a look at, let me know and I'll try to transcribe it.

What do the asterisks denote? Incumbent member of the local board, I think.

Thanks gents. I did wonder if that was the case.
I've not come across local boards before, I thought UDCs took over from sanitary districts?
