The little enclave that is North Cyprus recently held it's Presidential elections which returned a somewhat surprising result. The two round system was initially fought by the following:
Derviş Eroğlu – incumbent President of Northern Cyprus; independent candidate, supported by the National Unity Party and the Democratic Party
Sibel Siber – Speaker of the TRNC Parliament and candidate of the Republican Turkish Party
Mustafa Akıncı – Independent candidate, supported by the Communal Democracy Party and the United Cyprus Party
Kudret Özersay – Independent candidate
Mustafa Onurer – Cyprus Socialist Party candidate
Arif Salih Kırdağ – Independent
Mustafa Ulaş – Independent
One of the major casualties in the first round was Silber, which has caused ructions within the CTP with the Prime Minister stepping down at the Party Congress. Anyway Eroğlu and Akinici progressed through to the 2nd round. The former was expected to win comfortably; however as the day of the 2nd round of polling drew nearer the shit started flying in Akinici's direction. This failed to work and the former mayor of Nicosia (northern bit) galloped home by roughly 60/40.
The fallout could be quite interesting. Eroğlu has now stood down from political life, an acolyte of the Old Buzzard Denktas his style was beginnning to grate a little with the electorate. The usual give and take on both sides of the border is getting up a lot of noses, with increasing noises that the UN might just tell both sides to piss off and pull out. Akinici was a pretty successful Mayor in the 70's; he worked with his South Cyp opposite numbers to establish joint water/ sewerage systems and the like and unusually has thrown the status of Varosha into the pot.
The Island could be in for interesting times. There is a good Wikipedia page en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Cyprus_presidential_election,_2015 if anyone is interested in following up.
