Ted Jeory (who describes himself on Twitter as: "Journalist, ex-accountant, deputy editor Bureau of Investigative Journalism (& Tower Hamlets blogger). Paul Foot Award nominee 2013") reports the following:
* Given nature of THF as not a party this means election of all THF Cllrs now corrupt * Court names Alibor Choudhury as guilty of corrupt practices and must leave office immediately * Election to be avoided. Rahman banned from standing for vacant seat of mayor. He's also referred to SRA as he's a solicitor. Sensational * Alibor,Lutfur disqualified from office now.Other THF Cllrs remain. Police action possible. Oli Rahman acting mayor. Election poss June 12

The sad thing is that with a by-election just after the GE, the turnout will probably be really low, like it was in 2010, and a Rahman clone will probably get elected. Hopefully what has happened will motivate people to come out and vote to prevent that happening.

The date of the election isn't on TH website any more - unless someone has a direct link.
In court the counsel for the Returning Officer said that, when the Election Court formally reports its findings, it would need two electors to write to formally call the election.

Would John Biggs be running again for Labour? Or does he value his sanity wish to focus on the Assembly now?

Would John Biggs be running again for Labour? Or does he value his sanity wish to focus on the Assembly now? Interviewed on BBC London News on BBC1 at approx. 18.40 he said it was up to the local Labour Party whether he would be the candidate or not, but he appeared to me to be interested in running again.

Does that need to be the case? I was under the impression that a voided poll was taken to be simply called again as though under the normal timetable.

I also thought that a report that an election has been declared void doesn't require anyone to call the byelection.

This whole episode has been truly disturbing for our democracy and I am delighted that the concerns of voters has been so thoroughly addressed. Mr Rahman's tenure appears to have been an example of the worst kind of divide and rule politics: the damage to inter-community relations could yet prove to be deep-rooted and lasting. I hate it when election results are over-turned - I hate it more when there are such good reasons to have to do it.

Living in Tower Hamlets these days. Will be interesting to see what, if any, campaigning activity occurs on the Isle of Dogs.

Easy to forget now that Labour were genuinely confident of winning this contest last year, and deeply shocked when it didn't happen.
Many at the time put it down to people promising to vote Labour, but then switching to Rahman in the polling booth.
We now know that may well have happened in many cases, but not as a voluntary process.....

Living in Tower Hamlets these days. Will be interesting to see what, if any, campaigning activity occurs on the Isle of Dogs. It is essential that Tory, UKIP, LD and Green voters hold their noses and give Labour their second preference vote. The transfer rate last time was not good enough. The combined vote of Con, UKIP, Green and LD was over 18,000 but only 6,500 gave Biggs their second vote. If 10,000 had done so he would have won. That being the case Labour need to campaign hard across the borough.

Is anyone looking at the possibility of jail time over this? Don't be silly. Either the Police or the CPS will crush it because of "community cohesion".

Cynics thought that nothing would come of the case just concluded for the same reason, though..... Let's be optimistic for once, this is a real chance to change things

Cynics thought that nothing would come of the case just concluded for the same reason, though..... Let's be optimistic for once, this is a real chance to change things I didn't think it would be crushed for that reason as soon as Mr Mawrey was assigned to it. But remember Birmingham, no real police investigation afterwards and no charges laid. Does anyone think that the incoming Secretary of State has the fortitude to dissolve the whole council and have it reelected?
