Mark Reen, Tory Councillor for Northfield ward in LB Ealing, has resigned and triggered a by-election for 7th May. The first by-election in the Borough since GLA election day in 2008.
Labour got within 110 votes of winning a seat in the ward last May despite not targetting it. Although it had only Labour Cllrs throughout the Blair years (1994-2006), it had been assumed to have become safely Tory due to demographic change. It was the only Green target ward in the Borough in 2014 (they stood 3 candidates using the "first choice" formulation on the ballot paper) but on average were only around half the Labour vote - c. 700 to c.1400.

I thought the Rotherham elections had been deferred until 2016?

No, that is when they are having "all out" elections - one third of the council is up this May, as normal.

Were they originally planning to have all out elections this year then and that was deferred or am I totally confused?

Were they originally planning to have all out elections this year then and that was deferred or am I totally confused? No, only Doncaster was planning all-out this year (and there will be all-out there this year). All-out elections in Rotherham is coming from the report on the sex abuse scandal, which blamed current leadership.

Am I the only person who is bothered by the inaccuracy in the thread title (surely there will be more than one by-election on the 7th of May)?

David
Thank you very much for your summary above, which was extremely helpful. I don't know how you got round the Notices of Election so quickly.
Here are another half dozen to add to the list:
NON-METROPOLITAN DISTRICTS Basingstoke and Deane (Rooksdown) - additional Rushmoor (West Heath) - double Stroud (Nailsworth) - double
COUNTY COUNCILS Somerset (Taunton North)
SCOTLAND Fife (4. Dunfermline South) Perth and Kinross (12. Perth Town Centre).
I think this makes the tally 85 so far - 11 Metropolitan Boroughs, 5 Unitary Councils, 30 Non-Metropolitan Districts (including the Cheltenham vacancy), 19 County Councils (including 8 in Unitary Counties), 13 London Boroughs, 5 Wales and 2 Scotland.

NON-METROPOLITAN DISTRICTS Stroud (Nailsworth) - double
I think this seat was due this May and is not a by-election.

NON-METROPOLITAN DISTRICTS Stroud (Nailsworth) - double I think this seat was due this May and is not a by-election. This seems to be right from the Stroud website under seats up for election, Nailsworth is listed as currently vacant.

My apologies - Middle Englander is correct.
The six-month rule applies to the Nailsworth vacancy - so there is only the ordinary election and not a double.

There is no byelection in Epping Forest, Roydon; it's a single member ward but it changed cycles and now elects in 2007, 2011, 2015 etc.
There is no double vacancy election in Derby, Littleover. This was a misreading of last year's Notice of Election.

There will also be a by-election in the Nairn ward of the Highland Council after Colin Macaulay of the SNP resigns for health reasons. The by-election will be contested by the SNP, Labour, the LibDems, and two Independents.
