I imagine that there will be several dozen by-elections timed to co-incide with the other elections taking place on May 7th. In Councils which elect by thirds, it allows by-elections to take place at the same time as the ordinary council elections. Even where no council elections are due on that date, we can be sure that a raft of by-elections will be slated for 7th May. The excuse for by elections on 7th May is "saving money" but in practice it just reflects local parties' calculations of maximum political advantage. Parties either believe that a high turnout will help them in a by-election or that the GE on the same day will help mask local issues which are electorally inconvenient.
How many such by-elections appear to be likely, and what is the latest date by which we should have a full list? It seems to me that these by-elections will be all but lost in the public consciousness given the GE, the scheduled metropolitan Borough/UA/District /Mayoral Local elections (outside London) and the number of Parish elections also taking place then.

I make it there were 48 by-elections on 5th May 2011, the same stage of the local council elections cycle as the coming May. 21 were single elections and 27 were "double" elections. There were 64 vacancies then identified as subject to the "six month" rule although accurate identification can sometimes be problematic.

Cockett on Swansea (Lab Defence) has already been pencilled in for General Election Day (as the sitting Labour councillor will resign on March 20th to allow for the by-election to be held on election day)
