Labour would probably be about 4% further ahead in the opinion polls.

It rather depends how he won. Are we talking about a narrow victory because a few MPs shift their second preferences, or a convincing victory due to a competent campaign making use of the front-runner's position? The first would immediately have placed him in a position of immense weakness, particularly if reports of his planned conference speech are accurate.

UKIP might be doing even better in the polls than they are?
(amongst their lines are regular attacks on "war criminal and torture apologist" Miliband D)

Would be exactly the same, and we would have the same threads with people claiming than Ed would do 4% better.

The proportion of Lib Dem to Labour defectors would be less (they would go Green instead), while the proportion of Conservative to Labour defectors would be more, and they would more or less balance each other out compared with now. Mutterings against the Labour leader would not be significantly different.

The Mail would accuse Labour of having elected the wrong brother?

Would only be a slight difference in political fortune. The problem with labour is not entirely about Ed Milliband. And those who think a change of leader will dramatically improve their fortunes are sadly deluding themselves.
The problem is that the current feeling is not an anti-government feeling but an anti-establishment politics feeling/mood. Given that this is the case, D.Milliband might be a better communicator but labour's fortunes would not improve very much, as both D.Milliband and E/Milliband are seen as part of the labour party and political establishment.

No, because he was never elected leader!
I woud also expect Farage to make a lot more of his personal opposition to the Iraq war in those circumstances.

ie. I have never heard that line of attack from UKIP. I hadn't appreciated that the Bishop was speaking counterfactually

David Milliband wins the 2010 Labour leadership contest, the Unite union block vote doesn't do enough for Edd

The evidence for this is basically non existent, I'm afraid.
