The Wokingham by-election should be really interesting. Both Labour, LibDems and Conservatives won recently there and in the three last elections, they all finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd once. Also, all parties but Lib Dems are going with candidates which already ran there. The Labour candidate ran in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012 the Conservative one in 2007, the UKIP one in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2014 and the Green one in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014.

The wierd and unexplainable swings are explainable with candidates, I suppose, since they don't really make sense.

Interesting point about Nancy Wightman having been once of the last councillors to have sat before the 1974 re-organisation.  Anyone know if many more are left?  Can't be loads.

It was John Muckle, not Wightman (who was first elected in 2003). I agree that there can't be many left.

I believe Godfrey Olson representing Hiltingbury East (very posh Chandlers Ford) on Eastleigh predates 1974- if that's right, he's probably older than most of the properties in the area he serves.

Albert Davies, Abercynon Ward on Rhondda Cynon Taf council, has sat since Mountain Ash UDC.

And there is a by-election on 11th December referred to on the main thread in Trelech, Carmarthenshire.  The retiring incumbent refers to serving for 50 years www.carmarthenjournal.co.uk/County-councillor-Dai-Trelech-Thomas-resigns-50/story-24512994-detail/story.html .  Whether that is as a UDC or county councillor it isn't clear

I checked and William David Thomas was on Carmarthen District Council (Trelech ward) up to 1995, and on Carmarthenshire County Council (Trelech division) from 1995. He doesn't seem to have stood for the county council before the reorganisation.

The Dartford byelections were apparently the subject of an informal agreement between Labour and Conservative to leave the seats vacant until May, but UKIP called the byelections. The bigger UKIP challenge is thought to be in Brent ward.
