Which he could have done .... would he have won the election as the Tory party tore themselves apart?

There was more chance of Brown defecting to Mebyon Kernow than calling an EU referendum - it's just not a feasible scenario.
There's no justice in the world. I can't even log on while there's some nutjob on another thread going on about how Israel was responsible for 9/11, etc. I can't even post on some threads. I now know what it felt like for Roy Jenkins when he was beaten by George Galloway.

It steams up the window as you gaze longingly at the antics going on inside .....

I had a bit of a problem with login and almost posted as guest .... keep trying Labour had nothing to lose with an EU referendum, they had a more or less coherent policy position so could state they were in favour of membership for reason X,Y,Z but would abide by public decision on a no. Liberals could say the same. Tories however would have a problem as half the party would go off message and cite reasons to leave demonstrating a fundamental split on what would be the central election issue. The danger of a referendum at that time was the danger of making the already dire economic situation even worse.
