In Clacton, there were 16000 votes cast in the primary - the winning candidate eventually got barely 8000... Do you mean Totnes? I understand that Clacton was similar...

I wonder if there was some kind of campaign (from UKIP perhaps?) to encourage people to send back blank or spoiled ballots? It does seem odd as I imagine that 99.5% of people who don't support the Tories or aren't interested would just ignore the ballot paper. If half of one percent of people were to send in spoilt ballots that would still be a give a figure in the low hundreds. If just 2% percent of them returned spoilt ballots that would give c.1500 spoiled ballots that would make sense of Isabel Hardman being given a figure of 4,000. I would fully expect the number of spoilt ballots to be far higher than it was in Totnes, party from UKIP supporters doing things writing in Reckless' name or saying 'vote UKIP' but also from other people who don't like the Tories responding to the intense Tory campaign and letter from the PM by expressing their thoughts and sending them back, in their pre paid envelopes. I could believe that there were only a couple of hundred spoilt ballots but what makes me suspicious is how quiet the Tories are being about it. Not only did they not give the figure but when they were asked for the number directly today by Michael Crick they flat refused to give it. I don't they would have refused if it was only a couple of hundred.

I understand that Clacton was similar... The Clacton 'open primary' was an open meeting rather than an all postal ballot. Only about 250 votes cast altogether. Most Conservative Party Westminster 'primaries' have in fact been open meetings like that. The only two previous all postal Conservative Westminster primaries were Totnes and Gosport in 2009. Totnes turnout was 16,497 whilst Gosport was 12,659.

The Tories are still refusing to release the full figures for the primary. Clearly they must have something to hide. Otherwise, why not release the numbers, as happened in Totnes and Gosport.

Its an absolute joke isn't it? I think that's the biggest clue that there was a big number of spoilt ballots. If it were just a couple of hundred the would have released the full figures. Clearly it must be a lot more than that. They've refused to release the full figures, they refused to have more than two primary candidates, they refused to have any candidate hustings. Maybe one reason why the turnout was so low is that some voters felt that their intelligence was being insulted by the suggestion that this was anything other that an utterly transparent ruse to get around laws on spending limits.

The woman the Tories have selected appears to be a bit of a cheerleader for Hamas judging by her Twitter Hardly. But like anyone with an ounce of sense, she opposes the behaviour of the Israeli government and its settlements and occupation. It was interesting to hear many Tory MP's express critical views - indeed, the best speech in the recent debate in Parliament came from a Conservative

Another headache for Dave. It turns out the new Tory candidate for Rochester is an anti-Israeli activist: mobile.twitter.com/montieTim Montgomerie: Very disappointing that the Tory candidate in Rochester advocates a boycott of Israel thejc.com/news/uk-news/1… 3:47pm - 24 Oct 14"Oh well, the vast majority of the British people agree with her and are appalled by the expansionist and occupying behaviour of the Zionist state and its illegal settlements.

Or if you want more than 140 characters: justqcharley.blogspot.co.uk/He looks like someone who was intending to start something called the "Just Political Party", but hadn't got round to registering it. Reading his posts, he seems to think of himself as a "compassionate conservative", centre right, but against things like the bedroom tax. As for Mike Barker, we have this comment from someone of that name on Facebook: And Stephen Goldsborough seems to want to start something called the "Christian Democratic Movement for World Peace UK": here he is on YouTube.
