I've just seen a trailer for something called 'Homes By The Coast' and saw someone who looked very much like Bob Marshall-Andrews. Does he own a particularly amazing house? He owns ' Malator', the so-called teletubby house, built in 1998 on the Pembrokeshire coast.

Did some canvassing for Labour today in Rochester and Strood. We went into a generally Tory supporting ward in Rochester when I suspect the key battlefield is Strood. However, there is an overpowering sense of a multi party choice and there was Labour support in the ward, leaning on concerns about the NHS and fear of xenophobia taking a grip on British politics. I did also find a Liberal Democrat lady who might transfer support to Labour. I am very concerned that Labour should get behind our good local candidate, because the result here will be seen, reasonably, as a signal of party prospects across a number of seats in Kent and Medway. The Tories have delivered a rather grey looking letter from the Prime Minister, which I didn't find had gone down very well. There is an expensive looking Reckless leaflet doing the rounds. One lady told me she'd never heard of him.

From the constituency I wonder if the slogan "Be Sensible - Vote Reckless" has been considered?

From the constituency I wonder if the slogan "Be Sensible - Vote Reckless" has been considered? I object to that pun on the grounds that it could encourage use of adjectives where adverbs are appropriate

Conservative Party confirm that an American-style "open primary" will be used to select their candidate All voters in Rochester and Strood are to have a say in who will be the Conservative candidate at the forthcoming by-election under plans to select the candidate through a postal primary. Source - www.kentonline.co.uk/medway/news/by-election-update-all-voters-will-24512/What are the implications of this in regard to campaign spending limits, since we are now within the 12-month "Regulated Period" before the General Election in May 2015?

The stars on the EU flag (12) do not represent the members (28). It was adopted by the EU in the 80s at a time there were ten members.

Or, indeed, adopted by the Council of Europe in the 1950s.

Protect the British adjective!

Out of the 4 candidates so far, which ones are likely to lose their deposit? The Green is most likely to lose his deposit. The Greens have a terrible record in by elections having kept their deposits only three times in their by elections history. The first time was in Vauxhall in 1989, a quarter of a century ago. The second in Haltemprice and Howden in 2008 where the Lib Dems and Labour didn't stand. The third time was in Norwich North in 2009 where despite a great deal of media hype about whether this was going to be their big by election breakthrough they still came behind UKIP. Given the swings away from Lib Dems in recent by elections and given that they only got 16.3% here last time its not unlikely that they will also lose their deposit.

UKIP 39%, Con 31%, Lab 23%, LD 3%, Green 2%, Oth 2%.

The conservatives are running a full postal open primary.....apparently. As for news reports that James Cracknell is going to be one of the choices for them, I can only say that its bollocks. James is one of my best friends and it simply isn't true. If he was then I would have known before anyone That's a relief, I thought Cracknell would have been quite strong. Any idea who the front runners are?

According to this news story the association has picked a shortlist, but we don't know yet who is on it.

Kelly Tolhurst has been a councillor for Rochester West ward since 2011; coincidentally she took over the seat from Mark Reckless when he was elected MP. Anna Firth was also first elected in 2011, in Brasted, Chevening and Sundridge ward.
