UKIP has to lead Labour by 5,240 in Rotherham to take it to a second round. Dang, I really want a second round!

According to LabList Labour need 44% in Rotherham to win on first preferences.

The Rotherham result is obviously being delayed by the higher turnout there.

Irrelevant, Labour got enough votes themselves to win it.

Total without Rotherham Lab 59,054 (52.3%) UKIP 32,675 (28.9%) C 14,600 (12.9%) ED 6,539 (5.8%) UKIP has to lead Labour by 5,240 in Rotherham to take it to a second round. I think it is that UKIP, Tory and ED combined would need to lead Labour by that amount

I'm hearing that Labour was 800 in the lead in Rotherham, and has won on first preferences with 50.02% overall.

Surely that merits a recount? Why on earth would it merit a recount? Because only a few misplaced votes could reduce the 50.02% figure to 49.99%. This is about following procedurals I thought, not about the fact that it would be almost impossible for Labour to lose from 49.99%.

Given the circumstances of the by-election, a poor result for UKIP IMO

Conspiracy theories already doing the rounds on the twattersphere I see... about a police commissar by-election. There is no hope for humanity.

Given the circumstances of the by-election, a poor result for UKIP IMO In Rotherham, yes. In Barnsley, Donny and Sheffield, the fallout from Rotherham wasn't too likely to provoke a vast, mass reaction.

Agreed, I was talking more specifically about the Rotherham result (though I thought UKIP might perform better elsewhere anyway)
