This is a stunning result for National who have an outright majority and do not need to be in coalition. I was the only vote above for NZFirst am delighted at their 11 seats (breathing down the necks of the Greens)and there to aid National in any strained parliamentary votes. Excellent result.

John Key has indicated that he hopes to negotiate a continuation of the confidence and supply deals he had in the two previous parliaments with United Future, ACT and The Maori Party. While he could try and govern without such agreements his majority of 1 is obviously very precarious.

What's irritating is that the opposition could have won had they played things right; instead the result is this. Napier is a silver ling of sorts even if it's technically a vote-split fluke; it has a very long history of Labour representation and its nice to see it return.

Special votes counted and Greens up from 10% to 10.7%, so one extra MP bringing them up to the same number as last time (14). This came at the expense of a National MP, so they no won't have a majority in this parliament after all
