Someone's won the Flintshire by-election. No idea who it is. All I know is it's not Labour but they missed out by 14 votes.

Re- Mostyn Flintshire. Rather puzzling really. I was shortlisted to be the Labour PPC for Delyn back in 1986 and my strongest supporter was none other than the said Patrick Heesom who has been disqualified as an Independent councillor. At the time hewas very left wing!

I obtained my figures last night for Thurmaston by election from the Labour PPC for Charnwood. Hopefully the Council will have the result up on its website this morning.

No its in Charnwood. It's a Leicester suburb and I guess various ethnic factors played a role in the abysmal Tory performance

Thurmaston is 25% non British (south Asian) but it has been for many years. UKIP and Tory vote would have beaten Labour. My guess is that UKIP took mainly Tory and BNP votes. The later polled 713 in a comparable election in 2007,in the counties last May the BNP polled over 250. They even got beaten by the British Democrats.
The big issues locally are closing of a library and plans to build 4,500 houses - all are the fault of the Conservatives hence their drop. In 2011 they held all three borough seats.
That saying Labour bank 80% of the south Asian vote. In three sub wards, UKIP and Labour were neck and neck and Conservatives not far behind. In the fourth (the south Asian area) Labour were miles ahead.

I understand that the Independent who won, David Roney, is a Green Party member, but that he stood as an Independent because we have no local party covering that area to support his campaign.

For those interested in parish council by-elections, there was apparently one in the marginal seat of Norwich North yesterday:
Hellesdon PC, Hellesdon South-East
Con 300 LD 273 Lab 226
At a district council level, the ward is represented by one Tory and one LD.
