Thank you for putting these up UKIP not defending one of their few Welsh seats has to be a bit of a surprise. Perhaps they are supporting one of the independents (both were candidates in 2012) and Barsi was the PBP councillor for the 2004-2008 term. Those are a very interesting set of by-elections, but predicting them is much more complicated (especially the Welsh ones). British Democrats are the new party of Andrew Brons claiming than BNP is too much watered-down.

Thurmaston ward is co-terminous with the county division of the same name. Results in 2013 there: Lab 1094 Con 971 BNP 242

UKIP not defending one of their few Welsh seats has to be a bit of a surprise. The late UKIP councillor was previously an Independent councillor and was presumably elected on that basis.

Thanks, Doktorb and Maxque, for the link to the article by Matthew Collins of Hope Not Hate about the formation of the British Democrats.

Various parties are of a one man and his dog formation in different parts of the country.

Patronymics using the mother's first name aren't that uncommon in Iceland - they're used where a child's father is unknown or disliked by the child, or by parents of a hippyish bent. Presumably this is something similar.

The birth of "EVASDAUGHTER, PHAEDRA ELYESE A I" was recorded in Huddersfield in 1988 and Susan Evasdaughter's marriage was registered there the following year. Phaedra is now going by the name of Phaedra Susans.

Presumably this is something similar. Patronymics using the mother's first name were not uncommon in medieval England, for the first reason that EAL gave, and there are plenty of surnames around today based on them, such as Jayne (Eva can also be found as a surname today). Indeed a small number of people with very common names such as Jones will have a name that originally derived from a female rather than a male name. The addition of 'daughter' to a patronymic name was not unknown in medieval England, though it was a fairly rare occurrence. Most of these will have died out due to having their names contracted over the years to ease their pronunciation. It is interesting to hear that one still survives (assuming it is of English origin), as I have never come across one here before.

I was under the impression that Icelandic women always had matronymic names, thanks EAL for the enlightening explanation. I suspected this was a feminist or similar choice, but thanks to Philip for that bit of research. I think it's a modern one rather than a survival

IIRC Charnwood has one of the two BNP councillors remaining in the whole country. Yes, Catherine Duffy, for East Goscote, reelected by 5 votes in 2011 over a Conservative.
