Burgess Hill TC byelection in St Andrews ward: Lab 318 C 307 L Dem 309 UKIP 127 GP 45 Ind 16 an amazing result for Labour when one thinks that just last year in this 3 member ward, the Tories won all 3 seats and Libs and Lab could only manage 1 candidate each - both of whom were miles behind - and Labour actually behind the LDs!

At best/worst a hung council with Labour largest party. If we take the 24 seats in wards where they currently have some or all councillors as a given, then they need another 8 seats out of Hale, East Barnet and BP. Hale is not a problem but the others are more doubtful. Unless they can pull something off in Childs Hill which I also think doubtful. Of course if the national polls have gotten much worse than now then it is just about possible, but then that was always the case and we didn't need this by-election to tell us that

That's a great result for Labour in Barnet and some good showings by UKIP on the south coast.

NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE Town: Lab 50.9% (+2.4) C 42.7% (+4.8) BNP 6.4% North Lincolnshire is one of those places that always seems to go against the tide - a Labour gain in 2007 and then a Tory gain in 2011. North Lincolnshire is one of those strange places. End of sentence.

Not just that, but the names of the two main candidates suggests other possible reasons for a pro-Tory swing

Is the Barnet result the first actual gain by Labour in any London Borough since the 2010 elections? I recall seeing a few near misses but no actual gains but there may have been one that I missed.

Remarkably, that does seem to be the case - though there have been a few Labour holds in "split" wards.

A referendum was due to be held in a village today 31st May to find out what residents think of plans to build 2,500 homes nearby. The call for a ballot was made at a parish meeting in Barwell last month. Polling stations will be open in the village between 4pm and 9pm and the result should be declared by 11pm. Many villagers are opposed to plans which would help Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council meet its housing quota. A planning application has been submitted which includes community facilities and a business park. It is likely to be determined later this year. The outcome of the poll will not be binding on planners considering the application submitted by Ainscough Strategic Land, Barwood Development Securities and Taylor Wimpey. The poll, likely to cost £7,000, will be paid for by the parish council. 96% voted against the housing approx 25% turnout, report on radio followed by Lib Dem cllr for H&B saying the houses are good for barwell. Wish cllrs would listen to locals

in any vote like that it will always go against the plans ...
tories and LD's on one hand say they want localism then deliver planning policies against that. Prob is we need the homes and then we get the conflict !
