A referendum was due to be held in a village today 31st May to find out what residents think of plans to build 2,500 homes nearby.

The call for a ballot was made at a parish meeting in Barwell last month.

Polling stations will be open in the village between 4pm and 9pm and the result should be declared by 11pm.

Many villagers are opposed to plans which would help Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council meet its housing quota.

A planning application has been submitted which includes community facilities and a business park. It is likely to be determined later this year.

The outcome of the poll will not be binding on planners considering the application submitted by Ainscough Strategic Land, Barwood Development Securities and Taylor Wimpey.

The poll, likely to cost £7,000, will be paid for by the parish council.

Just remembered that the other Brunswick Park ward in London (in Southwark) had a by-election on 10th March last year. The changes on that occasion were Lab +11.8%, LD -0.8%, Green -6.6%, Con -6.8%, TUSC +2.3%.

The town council wards are 6 in number so they are 1/3rd of the size of the Leeds CC wards . Turnout looks to have been around 10% .
