Hamilton 1978? (Haven't looked it up) I would have thought the SNP were still strong enough at that point to make it closer than 7k?

Hamilton is the one I missed out, because I looked at the votes on Wikipedia - 18880 to 12388, which is only 6492, but then when I looked again they list the majority as 7570, so I don't know which figures are accurate. Vision of Britain has the same votes (rather than majority) which would suggest it's not one and therefore I think Arundel and Shoreham is the 5th.
Pontefract and Castleford, majority 11428, is certainly one.

When I listed G. 2009, B. 1982 and A&Sh. 1971, I must have been thinking only of Conservative holds during Conservative governments. That would explain why I missed N. 1974 and P&C. 1978.

I have followed byelection results since I was 13 and used to do so avidly. I well remember the nights we spent waiting up when I was at college (and I was at university, in one role or another, for 12 years!). I vividly remember Ayrshire South in 1970, and the majority being a lot higher than expected. Maybe this was one of the reasons Wilson went to the country early? - but having subsequently been to see the seat I understand why in those pre-SNP days its Labour support was so like granite. For decades once I had a car I tried to visit and look round byelection seats during the campaign. But for the life of me, I had no recollection of a Pontefract & Castleford byelection in 1978!

Do we have a definitive answer to this, then?
