Probably not worth a thread of its own. Please move elsewhere if so. Anyway... Pop quiz!
Jenrick's majority at Newark was 7403. Name the last five Government party (stress on that, stonking opposition wins don't count) candidates to hold a seat in a by-election with a majority higher than 7403. And no looking it all up on Wikipedia, that's boring and cheating. I'm sure some of you could do it off the tops of your heads.

Think the last time this happened was on 27th May 1982, during the Falklands War, when Tim Smith retained Beaconsfield for the Conservatives with a majority of 13,053. The Labour candidate who lost his deposit was one Tony Blair.

Glenrothes possibly? I know the SNP can get close but don't remember them being close in this seat.

And I suspect you're all looking them up on the net and not knowing them off the top of your heads. Once John Loony is out of bed (about 3am isn't it?) I suspect he'll wipe the floor.

I think we'd be back into the 70s then. The Conservative majority in ARundel & Shoreham in 71 would have been huge, but maybe there are more recent ones than that.

Herts SW in 1979 which was my home constituency and hosted the first by-election of the 1979-83 Parliament returned a reasonably large Tory majority. I've followed the spirit and not looked up the result so no idea if its one of the correct answers but seems worth a guess. I'd say Newham South between the 1974 elections might be another possible

Was SW Herts the one where the MP stood down on medical advice and is still alive nearly 35 years later? Yes, but retiring on medical advice doesn't necessarily mean that your doctor has found a life-endangering condition. (And that is to assume that the reason given in public for the resignation was the real reason.)

Once John Loony is out of bed (about 3am isn't it?) I suspect he'll wipe the floor. Er, if I'm interneting at 3am it's because I haven't gone to bed yet, not because I've already got up. I know some of the answers because I looked them up in my notes and lists (not on Wikipedia) after the Newark result. Before Newark it was Glasgow N.E. 2009, Beaconsfield 1982, Arundel & Shoreham 1971. Before that I don't know without looking it up further... (goes to look up further) ... Enfield West 1970 Ayrshire South 1970 Abertillery 1965 Kinross & West Perthshire 1963 ...

I'd say Newham South between the 1974 elections might be another possible Oh yes.... that was a majority of 7,459. I must have missed it when I went through the lists before (due to it being such a low turnout of only 9k for the winner and 2k for the runner-up).

The majority in SW Herts was just 6772, so that doesn't count. But having checked there is another one that John has missed. Having checked I'm not going to give the answer, but we've only mentioned 4 out of 5 here so far, I think: Glasgow NE Beaconsfield Newham South Arundel and Shoreham
