I'd somehow missed that the Belgians are also going to the polls in a general. I quite frankly have no idea how it will go, although I assume it will mirror the Euro polls and be rather similar but with a strong PTB challenge. But then thankfully I have 18 months to mull it over before committing- that's how it works, I believe.

I tell a lie- La Libre Belgique reporting that the N-VA will break through the 30% barrier in Flanders, and that the PTB and Parti populaire will win seats in Wallonia.

A disappointing night for fans of arseholes, blowhards and gobshites, as Vlaams Belang and the PS lose seats, the revolting Laurent Louis is not elected, and Jean-Marie Dedecker's list (aka I Can't Believe It's Another Splinter from the VLD), and indeed Dedecker himself, lose their representation in the chamber. That and Michel Daerden is still dead.
Fans of arseholes, blowhards and gobshites can be pleased that Joelle Milquet is still with us.
Intriguingly, Vincent Kompany's father Pierre was an unsuccessful candidate for the CDH in Brussels' regional elections.
A horrible night for Ecolo.

It appears we're headed for what the papers are calling "La Suedoise" (the Swedish coalition), or a new variation on Blue-Yellow, with the Francophone MR, and the Flemish CD&V, VLD and NV-A. This is highly unusual as it includes the Flemish Christian Democrats and not their Francophone counterparts. It will also be the first government for years with neither socialists nor ecologists. And to add to all of that, the PS-CDH coalition in Wallonia means that the Walloon government includes none of the proposed government parties. The CDH have decided not to join in despite their newer leader, Benoit Lutgen, being probably the first Walloon politician to ever acknowledge the misery inflicted upon the Flemings since 1830 by the Francophones (or more accurately, the Francophone Bruxellois elite).
I'd imagine that either Kris Peeters or Charles Michel will get the job of PM. I'd prefer them to break with a certain generation and bring in a younger PM such as Charles Michel (a vast improvement on his father), Gwendolyn Rutten (VLD) or Wouter Beke (CD&V). It will not be a NV-A character.
The NV-A will probably kill off the Vlaams Belang if they make a good fist of government. Despite many fruitless attempts to do so, nobody has successfully managed to paint the NV-A as dangerous racists.
This won't be the end of di Rupo, and Western Europe's least convincingly socialist party will be back soon enough to bring its magical formula of corruption and occasional assassination (allegedly) back to the big time.

Surely the opportunity to have a prime minister called Gwendolyn is too good to miss?

Oh yes, and I bet any money that if it happens, she'll be nicknamed Iron Gwen and the press will dust down all those articles comparing a female politician to Mrs. Thatcher (hello, Sabine Herold) and tweak the wording.

Lo, a government at last! www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-29534704A "Swedish" coalition of liberals, Christian democrats (only the Flemish ones) and even the separatist N-VA, led by Charles Michel. So, after no French-speaking PM for 30 years, we're now on the second in a row. Delight abounds not just here at Devil Wincarnate Towers but presumably elsewhere on this board regardless of political hues, as Western Europe's ultimate gangster political party have been frozen out.
