Polling tomorrow. Doug Ford is well behind in the polls; John Tory (a Progressive Conservative, as the party is still called in Ontario) is leading. He's a centrist 'Red Tory' and I assume most of his vote is actually coming from people who vote Liberal in provincial and federal elections. Doug Ford is probably picking up the Conservative vote, and Olivia Chow the NDP vote. Toronto just needs someone competent in charge, as its council has been a shambles ever since the city was merged with the surrounding boroughs seventeen years ago. A Tory called Tory! Pity Olivia Chow didn't do better. It does say something about Toronto that Ford ever got elected at all, let alone hos brother coming second-by-proxy Still, goes to show voting for jokey candidates isn't confined to this country, and further solidifies my total opposition to elected mayors and boss politics

Rob Ford got elected as a councillor (councilman?) with over 60% of the vote.
60% !!!!
What would he have to do to lose ??
In the safest red/blue council seat in the UK you couldn't get elected with his back story .....

There was an interesting analysis in the Toronto Star which highlighted that there was a strong correlation between deprivation and voting for Doug Ford in the mayoral election - a right-wing populist did best in poorer areas. Echoes of UKIP's 'left behind' electorate perhaps? Also, John Tory is having very much an "upper class, privilegied, privately educated" vibe. His vote is very well correlated to income.
