The latest poll I could find was from March when Chow was about six points ahead. Given that the election isn't until October I suspect they'll be all sorts of fluctuations between now and then.

I'm pretty sure I saw one around 3 weeks ago where they were tied, but I've been working so late revising my dreams are getting disturbingly realistic. Still the conservatives seem to have a large vote split, which in Toronto is pretty amazing. Except Ford's vote is far from straightforwardly Conservative. Some of his strongest areas last time were outlying areas with high minority populations and a tendency to vote NDP (and his home ward, whilst generally Conservative-inclined, is fairly lower-middle class in composition). Ford has an anti-politics vote. Think UKIP, but more of a non-stop trainwreck.

Hall was the incumbent Mayor of the old City of Toronto and (at the time) was NDP-ish. Lastman was the incumbent Mayor of the old North York and is a classic North American Municipal Conservative. Miller is a social democrat (and NDP member until first elected), Tory would later become the disastrous leader of the provincial PC's, while Nunziata is an ex-Liberal MP and populist lunatic. Pitfield is another NAMC. The runner-up in 2010 was George Smitherman a Liberal MPP.

Census stuff from the late 1990s or so: Things have changed a lot in parts of the city, but it gives an indication.

The current city of Toronto was only formed in 1997 as part of the 'Common Sense Revolution' - merging the old city of Toronto with the surrounding boroughs of York, East York, North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke. It was a very unpopular merger. Wasn't that the one that the NDP filibustered by forcing a Parliamentary vote on each individual street?

They also forced votes over 700 different dates for the date of the merger. I think than Liberals also did something similar, on a smaller scale on that subject.

They proposed that residents of each street be consulted on the merger via something like 12,000 amendments (the Liberals joined in as well). One street actually got a consultation but this was later cancelled.
One provincial legislature had a filibuster involving a bill with the name of every stream and river in the province in it. Took the whole day to read.
EDIT: Wikipedia tells me that the Liberal amendments were the 700 dates Maxque refers to above and that the river and stream thing was also in Ontario.

Took the whole day to read. Same province and a member in common. Mike Harris (PC). He was the member who proposed the bill about streams, rivers and lakes (to delay NDP budget) and he was the provincial Premier (a few years later) during the Toronto merger.

The world has been cheated out of the chance of seeing Rob Ford defend his Mayoralty at the polls on 27 October. He's withdrawn after an abdominal tumour was found. His brother Doug will take his place on the ballot (he's a current city councillor).

Polling tomorrow. Doug Ford is well behind in the polls; John Tory (a Progressive Conservative, as the party is still called in Ontario) is leading.
