Can't be many Scottish elections that feature both a "Sandy" and a "Wallace".  Also, I see the ward contains nine railway stations - basically all of the West Highland Line beyond Fort William except for Lochailort which lies just to the south of the ward boundary. I reckon this must be the electoral ward with the most stations anywhere in the UK? |

I've done the Mallaig line, and very nice it is too. Will never forget the woman 'commuting' from Morrison's in Fort to a request stop nearly an hour away...

An hour isn't a long commute. My morning train to uni used to leave Motherwell at 0728 and arrive Edinburgh at 0834. And there's only a few of them direct each day too. =P

Fort William to Beasdale, which is the most distant request stop, is a distance of 31.6 miles, covered by the train in 59 minutes. This isn't exactly a high speed line. |

Hehe, indeed not. I can't remember exactly where she got off, but seeing a Morrisons uniform travel so far by train after work stuck with me....

I used to start work in the Esplanade Hotel in Rothesay at 7.30am, and would arrive at just about the same time as the bus to Dunoon was due outside in the town square. There were at least a dozen regular commuters on that journey, which would take over an hour and include a short hop on Bute's secondary ferry route between Rhubodach and Colintraive.

Total number of votes cast in Caol & Mallaig by-election was 2,414 giving a turnout of 34.4%.
