Well, well, well. The FN scraped over in H-B by 30 votes, recount called. Juppe elected in Bordeaux yet again, Noel Malmere the same in Begles, and Melenchon has thrown a wobblie and stored of TF1 because they didn't show the FdG score. Just having a look at some information about Steeve Briois the new FN mayor. In December of last year he and another FN official from the area Bruno Bilde successfully sued a book that was being published about the FN and got the court to order that four passages from the book be removed. The publishers claimed that the passages were in he public interest to publish especially considering the FN's position on marriage. Briois and Bilde however successfully argued that the passages in question were a violation of their privacy.

One of the worst results for the PS has come in Marseille, where it seems that they have crashed into third.

Not entirely sure what to make of the FN. On the one hand of course I have heard that Marine Le Pen has done much to modernise and moderate the FN and they have clearly been rewarded for that at the ballot box. On the other hand they are still associated with anti-Muslim/anti-Jewish politics which is not something that I have any time for. I know Le Pen has said herself that she wants to make the FN more like UKIP and less like the BNP but obviously I'm not in a position to judge how well she has done that.

Results of First Round where I live.
Blagnac
• Bernard KELLER UNION OF THE LEFT PS 37.98% sitting Mayor
• Bernard LOUMAGNE MISCELLANEOUS LEFT 32.11%
• David GERSON UNION OF THE RIGHT UMP 21.82%
• Michel INDELICATO LEFT FRONT 8.09%
• REGISTERED 15477 • ABSTENTIONS 5866 (37.9%) • VOTERS 9611 (62.1%) • BLANK AND INVALID 340 (2.2%) • CAST 9271 (59.9%)
I'd expect the PS to hold Blagnac on the Second Round next Sunday, but it's a 3 horse race. Note no FN in Blagnac, a left wing town and than makes me even more happy to live here.
Meanwhile in nearby Toulouse
Toulouse
Results of the First Round
• Jean-Luc MOUDENC UNION OF THE RIGHT UMP 38.2% previous Mayor
• Pierre COHEN UNION OF THE LEFT PS 32.26% sitting Mayor
• Serge LAROZE NATIONAL FRONT FN 8.15%
• Antoine MAURICE EUROPE-ECOLOGIE-GREENS 6.99%
• Jean-Christophe SELLIN LEFT FRONT 5.1%
• ENROLLED 254,538 • ABSTENTIONS 121,629 (47.78%) • VOTERS 132,909 (52.22%) • BLANK AND INVALID 3185 (1.25%) • EXPRESSED 129,724 (50.96%)
This will be the more interesting contest and I hate to say it but I think that the UMP will win it back next Sunday given the split of the vote unless those disgruntled PS voters who sat on their fat derrière come out next week and vote PS to stop the UMP as it could be close in a two man play-off.
So as predicted a poor day for the PS, a good one for the UMP, and a very good one for the FN.
I DO have to say that the TV Coverage lacked the excitement of Election Special on UK TV. Perhaps because I do not as yet know the politics of the various Cities and Towns here compared to 45 years of knowledge of the British Political scene.

No, elections night in France are terrible. 10% results, 90% talking-heads.
And you are apparently ready to return in UK if you need to quickly, since you live in the commune containing Toulouse airport.

Maxque, I will only return to live in the UK if taken there in handcuffs and leg-irons. I NEVER want to live there again though of course will visit friends from time to time. As far as I am concerned Britain is finished whether it remains Cameron's Kingdom or becomes Miliband's Monarchy in May 2015 and I want no part of it now save for the State Pension I have paid towards for 42 years via Compulsory National Insurance deductions from my wages and am thus ENTITLED to receive in Dec 2018, God Willing.
I live 30 minutes walk from Blagnac Airport and work 5 minutes walk from it.

An couple of interesting asides. Firstly, when I voted yesterday in France I do NOT think that any number nor mark was put on the envelope containing the paper with my party list that I put on the Ballot Box. I will look more carefully next Sunday when I vote again in the Second Round.
Now any of us who are Old Hands in UK politics will know that voting in the UK is not REALLY a Secret Ballot as each Ballot Paper is in a booklet like Raffle Tickets and has a counterfoil with the number printed on it and the paper itself and the Clerk writes the voter's number from the Electoral Register on that counterfoil before crossing them off the list and handing them the Ballot Paper. Thus it is possible for those with the requisite authority to match the ballot paper number to the voter's Electoral Register number for any UK election. This would not seem to be possible in the French system so they have a more secret ballot than Britain. The fact that here in France one has to put one's envelope in the ballot box in front of one of the clerks would prevent someone stuffing the box with multiple votes for their party.
Secondly, in France The State reimburses the expenses, no doubt subject to approval and a limit, of each candidate. I prefer that compared to the UK system as it will prevent those with money buying influence and allow the little guy/party to stand in elections even if they are not wealthy.

I have been waiting for Belgium to split into a Flemish and a Walloon section for many years now and it might just be the best thing that could happen for BOTH communities.

Having lived in Wallonia, I think it'd be the best thing possible for Flanders, and for the German-speaking area (which Wallonia rules as a satrapy). It'll be a disaster for Wallonia, as they will be unable to bilk Flanders for money any more.

What say you about Flanders merging into the Netherlands, and Wallonia France, rather than the two becoming independent state(lets)?
