Labour were significantly stronger in 2011 in the other Chertsey ward (which saw the bulk of the flooding). If that was also the case in 2013, UKIP must have run the Tories fairly close in Chertsey Meads last May.

The previous holder of the seat did not die. She just moved away "to spend more time with her family"

so was it a death or a move away?

She has moved to Kent with her husband who lost his seat in the same UA elections .

Can't read the numbers on the tables you posted so can you repost as text please? I have looked at the East Hampshire Council website but the results aren't on there yet.

No surprise that Tories held both seats in that area.

BTW as Elections are normally held on Thursdays in England, why were these held on a Wednesday?

The gist I got from murmurs from others and half-intelligent council website pages was that they had problems setting up polling stations on a Thursday.

This might be a good time to repeat that there is no law that UK elections *have* to be on Thursdays - just tradition.

I think there's a good chance of a LD gain in Barham tonight... I'm hoping for 15-20% for the UKIP vote but it will depend on how strongly the Green's do.
There are 4 polling areas in the ward - Kingston seems strongly Lib dem - the Tories didn't even bother to have Tellers there, Adisham is the Green stronghold, Barham should be Tory but we might have picked some support up there, and Woolwich is where Labour are hoping to pick up some support...

I didn't run this campaign, but supervised the team which I won with in Sealsalter, allowing them to try things their way in preparation for the full elections next year, but under guidance. It was a useful experiment ...
