I live in Canton ward, but sadly out of the area this week though so missed it. The leaflet count up to last weekend was about Plaid 6 Lab 3 Con 1 LD 0 Green 0, Plaid being mostly about apparent (but possibly untrue) lab plans to make the main shopping street one way. Also the ward does contain some of what loosely counts as pontcanna, and chapter arts centre, which do seem like their natural territory. Pontcanna is mainly in Riverside... and looks like the green vote collapsed. I think the shine may be coming off the Labour administration in Cardiff, Russel Goodwage strikes again. I think Cardiff is turning out to be very much Labour vs everyone else where there are different strengths for other parties in different parts of the city. Plaid are strongest in the West, Grangetown and to a lesser extent Butetown and Llanrumney, The Tories in parts of the North and the Lib Dems in the Centre.

That's pretty decent swing to Plaid in Cardiff - any ideas why? Partly down to the Green vote collapsing In 2012 the Welsh Greens targeted Canton fairly heavily, which was why they managed to gain third place. However, I think they were disappointed with how far behind Labour they still were, and since then some of their activists have moved away, so I suspect they did little if anything there this time round. It does look like most of our previous vote went to Plaid, which isn't perhaps that surprising.

Pretty dire result for Labour in Charnwood. With all the fall out from the floods and the Lib Dems in the Coalition, to actually lose ground is lamentable.

Is this a wind-up?
Put simply, it is an area where the LibDems are (still) well-organised and Labour isn't.

Quite - I think the Cardiff result is actually rather worse for Labour than the Charnwood one.

Yeah, our support in Birstall actually held up a bit better than I thought it might.

Birstall is in effect an outer suburban commuter town attached to Leicester, and it's quite a prosperous place (as is most of Charnwood). In 1995 Labour's highest vote in any ward in Birstall was 21.8%.

Looking back, both the Tory and LD votes in Canton have collapsed too - leaving it as a Lab-PC fight this time. Remember in 2012 it was an election which Labour were aiming to win outright to take control. Its an interesting area - some friends of mine used to live there and its high in Welsh speakers and has something of a boho and multicultural feel, with a lot of young professionals, so a Labour-PC fight is what you might expect In 2001 [haven't seen figures for 2011] Canton was ranked 3rd of 27 wards/areas (some wards were aggregated for statistical purposes) for percentage Welsh-speaking, and 2nd for number of Welsh sopeakers (1,941).
