Largely for the sake of form, here are the results of the Bangladesh general election held on Sunday. Party | Seats | Unopposed returns | Total | Awami League | 104 | 127 | 231 | Jatiya Party | 13 | 20 | 33 | Bangladesh Workers Party | 4 | 2 | 6 | Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal | 2 | 3 | 5 | Bangladesh Nationalist Front | 1 | - | 1 | Tarikat | 1 | - | 1 | Jatiya Party (Anwar Hossain Manju) | - | 1 | 1 | Independents | 14 | - | 14 | Total | 139 | 153 | 292 | Elections postponed due to violence | | | 8 |
The main opposition party, the Bangladesh National Party, boycotted the election in protest at the change in the constitution which allows the government to stay in office during the election period; previously the government had handed over to a temporary technocratic government for the period of the polling. The eight seats postponed will now be polling on 16 January. Also, incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (Awami League) was elected in two constituencies, so will presumably have to decline one of them.
