May 2011 result C 1879 Lab 1757 LD 307 UKIP 205 Grn 202 May 2008 result C 1681 Lab 836 LD 334 Grn 225 Partly the Labour boost was due to national politics, but a big part of the difference between these two results was the campaign run by Labour in this ward between October 2010 and May 2011. One of the Labour guys who went over and helped in the 2008 Obama campaign was looking for somewhere to put the 'community organising' principles into action and chose Broadheath. He ran a full campaign, all out on every type of social media, including with some naff candidate videos (including bird track and mood music): Out doorknocking 4 days a week, speaking to people (rather than just asking for voting intention), sorting out local problems, getting posters up, putting out a positive newsletter every month. As the word got out in Labour activist circles, more and more volunteers made the trip to Trafford to have a go. A few blogs appeared on how the campaign was being run: www.progressonline.org.uk/2011/04/26/how-to-campaign-well/"First, before campaigning started, Andrew and Sam invested time in building the capacity of the campaign team. Briefings and get-togethers ensured that every volunteer was informed about the campaign, the ward and the issues, so that they felt more confident talking to voters. A campaign pack, telling them about the candidate, the council and the community, was prepared, and made available to every volunteer. Activists attending each campaign event were debriefed on how they’d found the day, and specifically and personally invited to return for the next event before they left, and to bring another volunteer with them next time – many of them did exactly that. Newcomers were encouraged to ‘tell their own story’ about why they’d got involved, not least as a means of bringing others on board." And by April the Tories had begun to realise how opinion was turning in Broadheath and threw everything they had at it. They held it by 122 votes that year, but lost it in 2012 thanks to the groundwork put in by the 2011 campaign. I will be awaiting the results of this by-election with some interest.

I have to say that I'm impressed by Labour's on-line presence with regards to Trafford. They've set up a dedicated Twitter account (@turntraffordred) and use that name in hashtags whenever they're talking about Broadheath. It all adds up to a very slick presence. You can see that the Obama magic has been sprinkled on there for sure.

Broadheath by-election: Electoral Commission conspire with Europhiles against UKIP and against the decent hard-working British people UKIP Trafford has been shocked by the Europhiles' latest blatant electoral bias against UKIP and the British people. I made a telephopne complaint to the Electoral Commission in London about the unfair treatment that UKIP has suffered in this week's by-election from Trafford Council. After less than an hour I was interrupted by the woman [yes, another one!] at the other end of the phone who complacently "informed" me that it is "usual practice" to list candidates alphabetically on the ballot papers. When I pointed out that "George" comes before "Helen" alphabetically (at least it did when I went to school, unless it's just another change that the unelected Brussels Eurocrats have stuffed down our throats, just like their straight bananas) she just laughed at me and hung up, before I'd even had a chance to register my complaint about the unequal name lengths on the ballot papers. Well, I've got that telephone conversation on tape, so we'll see how the Courts view such electoral bias. Looking into this in more detail the situation is more alarming. It appears that this is more than just a mere administrative oversight. It's now clear that there's a Brussel-based conspiracy against UKIP and the British people, unfairly propping up the complacent old political parties in the UK which all have vested financial interests in keeping us shackled to the European monstrosity that is the EU. It's political correctness gone mad. I call on the so-called Prime Minister of the UK, David Cameron, and the so-called leader of the Opposition, David Ed Milliband, to get a grip and treat all political parties with impartiality as is their legal obligation. This situation is totally unacceptable. If the taxpayer really does have to pay their eye-watering salaries then the least we expect is that they do their jobs. You, the electors of Broadheath, have the power this week to send a message to the European Commissioners, their lackeys in Trafford Council and their co-conspirators in the Electoral Commission. Even if they've conspired to put UKIP's Ron George in second place on the ballot paper, you can put him First by voting for him on Thursday. That'll send a clear message that the British people won't be bossed around by Europe, and as long as UKIP is around to stand up for the rights of the British people we won't submit to any revised Eurostandard alphabet either!! So be it. Such a lol!

Quite a decent turnout for a by-election in January. The voters have presumably been persuaded that it is close between Labour and Conservative. Which would suggest a squeeze on UKIP and the others. With apologies to those thinking I have the result or an indication thereof.

Someone on twitter has said it is the lowest turnout since at least 1997. I haven't checked to confirm though.

I think AD Stewart may have been taken in by UKIP twitter ramping - he is from Norfolk, not Trafford.
