There will shortly be two or three by-elections for the City of London Corporation in Castle Baynard Ward and in Portsoken Ward.
Castle Baynard ward is largely a business ward and had a fairly clear-cut win for the establishment candidates in last March's full council elections (Raymond CATT has resigned - another resignation is rumoured to occur next month):

CITY OF LONDON: CASTLE BAYNARD WARD
10 candidates for 8 seats (One extra seat in this ward this year)
Candidates:
Establishment: Christopher BODEN; Raymond CATT; Nigel CHALLIS; Michael HUDSON; Catherine MCGUINNESS; Graham PACKHAM; Henrika PRIEST; Jeremy SIMONS
Labour: Richard HARRINGTON
CRG: Muhammed AL-HUSSAINI
Six of the existing seven councilmen are restanding (William Hunt stands down). The two newcomers to the "Team" are a local businessman and a local residents' association chairman.
No doubt that the establishment candidates will win here, but the interest lies in the other two candidates:
The Labour candidate works in the ward and four of his five nomination signatories were from his place of work. The fifth is a YBF candidate in Farringdon Without, weho is the brother of Matthew Richardson. Several people have jumped to an incorrect conclusion from these facts. The reality is that they knew each other at Law College and it's a personal, not political, matter.
The CRG candidate is one of only two CRG candidates to have his own website: www.williamwallacecampaign.org For my money, it's the most interesting and original website of this campaign.
Christopher BODEN; 208 E
Raymond CATT; 190 E
Nigel CHALLIS; 193 E
Michael HUDSON; 197 E
Catherine MCGUINNESS; 213 E
Graham PACKHAM; 206 E
Henrika PRIEST; 225 E
Jeremy SIMONS 209 E
Richard HARRINGTON (Labour) 50
Muhammed AL-HUSSAINI (CRG) 39
But the vacancy in Portsoken ward is far more interesting, as this is a residential ward with significant deprivation issues and provides the Labour Party with a real chance of getting a first foothold on the City Corporation, where all 123 of the current members were returned as "Independent" or had no party description at all on the ballot paper. The by-election was caused by Ibthayhaj GANI's resignation.

CITY OF LONDON: PORTSOKEN WARD
7 candidates for 4 seats
Portsoken Ward is on the Eastestn fringes of the City, bordering Tower Hamlets. Portsoken is one of the four residential wards, although there is a sprinkling of business voters all the way through the ward.
All four retiring councilmen are seeking re-election:
Nicholas CRESSEY; John FLETCHER; Henry JONES; Delis REGIS.
We alsao have:
Labour: Damian VAUGH
CRG: Evan CRANFIELD
Other: Ibthayhaj GANI
Four years ago, Peter Kenyon for Labour came just 65 votes from getting a seat here.
John Fletcher gained his seat in a September 2011 by-election and is, or was, connected with the YBF individuals.
Evan Cranfield has an interesting website: www.evancranfield.info
If Labour cannot win in this ward of social deprivation, then they can't win anywhere in the City. My guess is that Portsoken voters will continue to go for the non-party options.
All four retiring councilmen are seeking re-election:
Nicholas CRESSEY (132); John FLETCHER (211E); Henry JONES (227E); Delis REGIS (209E).
We alsao have:
Labour: Damian VAUGH 112
CRG: Evan CRANFIELD 42
Other: Ibthayhaj GANI 205E
These by-elections will be the first contested by-elections in the City since last March and could also see if the City Reform Group and the Young Britons' Foundation re-appear. Earliest possible dates for these by-elections is March or possibly late February.
