Since the six month deadline has now passed and the Lambeth byelection next week will be the last before the full council elections in May, I thought it was time to update the summary of the causes of the 1,642 byelections in London since 1964. * The general trend of fewer byelections has been maintained; the 70 byelections in London since 2010 are the lowest ever in a full term. * There were slightly more resignations in this term than in the one immediately past, but not by much: 40 up to 45. Both figures are fewer than in any previous term. * The number of deaths of sitting councillors fell again, in line with a long term trend, to 20. This was the fewest in any term, except for 1971-74. * The number of disqualifications is rising. This is not due to an increase in the number of councillors disqualified for non-attendance; there was only one in this term.
