Cheers for that David, was very interesting to look through that list. The liverpool ones were interesting, a gain for the liberals (Arundel) and a hold with a small-ish majority (Dingle).

The Arundel byelection was an interesting one because there were accusations of Northern Ireland-style personation by the Labour (Militant) team. This was a ward Labour had only won in 1983. Dingle subsequently went to the SDP in May 1986 by 31 votes.

Back to 1986 the ordinary elections (and any coincident double vacancies) are in the Local Elections Handbooks (known 1986-88 as "The 198X Metropolitan Borough Council Election Results". Before then the Liverpool Echo used to carry council results.

The Liberal's 1984 conference was held between 17 and 22 September, in Bournemouth.

Unfortunately, Twentieth-Century British Political Facts, 1900-2000 lists the dates and venues for Conservative, Labour and Liberal/ Liberal Democrat conferences but not SDP conferences. So, I don't know.

So far as I can tell, most of the Metropolitan Counties had no division boundary changes throughout their brief existence, and the initial divisions were drawn up very quickly based on existing units. So the post-1983 revision Coventry South West Parliamentary seat will have differed considerably from the Coventry South West Electoral Division on the County Council but may well have been the same as the pre-1983 Parliamentary seat.

(Aside: I say no boundary changes, but in fact the LGBCE went ahead and did reviews after the 1981 elections in anticipation of the Met Counties continuing:

* West Midlands (October 1981)
* Greater Manchester (September 1984)
* West Yorkshire (October 1984)
* Merseyside (December 1984)

They seem to have decided to stop them when the abolition paving Bill was passed, so South Yorkshire and Tyne and Wear never got done.

Whenever I see reports like this I can't help thinking about all of those nice meals and accommodation that were presumably included as part of the package for those sitting on the committees or whatever they were called. Maybe even chauffeurs were provided for the most important people.
