The government over there is very unpopular so will be interested to see how that is reflected in the results.

Turnout at 12.00 was 19.44%. This is down on the local elections in 2009 where turnout was 21.23% at this time of day.

I am not sure that report is strictly correct . The Socialists did make gains although their vote was slightly down in % terms from 2009 . The Social Democrat vote was rather higher than that quoted in the article as in some areas they ran on tickets with 1 or more other parties and it is not possible to say what portion of that 15% or so of the vote would have been PSD .

I get the impression looking at the results that it wasn't so much that the PS results were that great but that they made gains because the PSD and allies results were worse. The real gains in terms of vote share seem to be made by the Communists and Independents. One of the Grupo CidadÃos seems to have gained control of Porto Council. The gains by the Communists are reversing a long term trend of decline for them, although I wonder if thats in part due to a decline in the BE vote. It will be interesting to see how they all do in next years European elections.

Yes I pretty much agree with that though add that EM BRANCO and NULOS vote shares also doubled though remaining at low levels .
