Here is some background to the by-election in the Oakfield ward of Aylesbury Town Council in Aylesbury Vale District (Buckinghamshire).
Aylesbury parish was created from part of the unparished area of Aylesbury Vale in 2001. It is the third largest parish in England by population, after Weston-super-Mare and Shrewsbury.
Aylesbury Town Council comprises 25 members elected from ten wards – Bedgrove (4), Central (2), Elmhurst (3), Gatehouse (3), Mandeville (3), Oakfield (2), Oxford Road (2), Quarrendon (2), Southcourt (2) and Walton Court (2).
For the town council elections in 2007, the town council comprised 24 members, with Central ward electing only 1 member.
Six of the town wards (including Oakfield) are coterminous with the district wards of the same name, whilst the remaining four town wards are combined with a neighbouring parish or parish ward to form the district ward.
The council strengths were: Elections on 3 May 2007: Lib Dem 20, Con 4 Elections on 5 May 2011: Lib Dem 15, Con 7, UKIP 2, Lab 1
The by-election is caused by the death of the town mayor, who was a Lib Dem. The deputy town mayor (a Conservative) has become the town mayor. The leader of the town council is Lib Dem.
The result of the election in Oakfield on 3 May 2007 (2 seats) was: Lib Dem 642/504, Con 404/389, Independent 334, UKIP 118 Elected: Lib Dem 2
The result of the election in Oakfield on 5 May 2011 (2 seats) was: Lib Dem 722/618, Independent 518, Lab 375/276 Elected: Lib Dem 2
It is instructive to compare the Oakfield town council result for 2011 with the district council result. There were no Conservative or UKIP candidates for the town council.
The present by-election was caused by the death of Steve Patrick (Lib Dem), the Mayor of Aylesbury, who died suddenly at the age of 59. He had served as leader of the town council from 2006 to 2013.
He was also a district councillor and the district by-election is being held on the same day. Allison Harrison, who holds the other town council seat in Oakfield, is the Lib Dem candidate for the district seat.
The five candidates are UKIP, Independent, Lab, Con and Lib Dem.
The result in the Oakfield ward of Aylesbury Vale District Council on 3 May 2007 (2 seats) was: Lib Dem 626/581, Con 418/412, Independent 301, UKIP 122 Elected: Lib Dem 2
The result in the Oakfield ward of Aylesbury Vale District Council on 5 May 2011 (2 seats) was Lib Dem 475/437, Con 431/419, Lab 336/246, Independent 288, UKIP 205/164 Elected: Lib Dem 2

disappointing result in Aylesbury. I guess the LDs still have enough of an activist base to bring to bear when they can concentrate on a single ward
