Those two links don't show a ward the same shape, on the ONS one there is a hook shape round the top, no such shape on the google map. Are there two by-elections? I am confused.

South Lakeland got re-warded in about 2008, that may be the issue.

Never quite understood the Lib Dem strength in Lakeland. I assume it's almost entirely down to Farron's personal popularity. I believe Windermere has been Lib Dem since at least the early 80s if not the 70s. Westmorland and Lonsdale has been there or thereabouts for us for decades. It is good territory that Tim and his team have turned into excellent territory. |

I suspect like many MPs in various parties that you have to live there to understand it. Don't get me wrong, I like Tim quite a lot but there are other LD MPs that I would see as being just as deserving.

Well, Westmorland is one seat where the Liberals always managed to maintain c.20% even in the dark days of the 50s and were pushing up towards 30% in Westmorland and Lonsdale from the time it was created, even if they didn't come close to winning it until 2001.

I haven't checked the results but I remember it always being a very solid Tory seat. I would have thought it only appeared on the Tory radar screen after 97 when the Tory majority was sharply reduced in line with the national trend, and there was a reasonably-sized third place Labour vote to squeeze (which you have now squeezed down to 2%). We came second in the predecessor seat, Westmorland, in 1959. It's one of those areas, like Southport, where the Liberals never went away. |

The text is right, the table has reversed the changes since 2008 - LDs are down 13.4% since then and Con up 9.3%
