The government in Northern Cyprus has collapsed with a fresh set of elections called. In the meantime the cabinet is now filled with (mainly) technocrats, and what must be a first for a Muslim country.. A female Prime Minister.
More to follow...

Bangladesh has had two rival female political leaders for a long time - Sheikh Hasina (Awami League, good guys) and Khaleda Zia (Bangladesh National Party, in league with Islamists Jamaat-e-Islami).

Tansu Ciller would also seem to be an appropriate person to mention - and that really is rubbing it in (and I think negates your comment about that part of the world).

Or slightly near, Golda Meir if we are talking part of the world rather than religion.
I would guess that a sizeable majority of the world's Islamic population live in countries which have had female leaders (factoring in Indira Ghandi).
Edit
Actually not true. I just checked wiki. It is over 49%. The catch is that a full quarter of Muslims live in Africa and female leaders have been rare there.

Actually it does beat 50%. A few countries I didn't think of have of course had women leaders (Senegal,Mali and Kyrguzstan) plus a few more that had high enough muslim populations to show (Mozambiqie and Phillipines). Total about 851 of 1619 million.

Well and truly put in my place. Can I safely say it is a first for NC then?

Hahaha! This thread is a bit like the sketch from "Life of Brian".
"APART FROM Turkey, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, Mali and Kyrgyzstan, which Muslim countries have ever had a woman prime minister or president?"

No Catholic. My reference to them had a significant Muslim population. I think it is the end towards Malaysia where they are concentrated, I seem to remember separatists with muslim issues.

Turkish North Cyprus will elect the parliament on January 7th.
According to polls with a ReBirth of UBP, but also rather a majority for the parties supporting ReUnification with the South.
