Over half the votes counted and he still has >50%. Even if he has zero votes in the rural areas, it's hard now to see him not topping the first round...

I have to give you that one, but I would not be surprised to see challenges.

Hassan Rouhani has definitely won the first round, as he has over 50% with 80% counted, while nearest rival Qalibaf has just 16%. It could still go to a second round, which might be problematic, as we saw in Zimbabwe that it's possible for the easy winner in the first round to have the election stolen from them in under 2 weeks.

Yes, fingers crossed this could be a significant turning-point in Iran's future...

Contradiction! If it had gone to a second round, he wouldn't have won the first round. His winning the first round means that it won't go to a second round.

The religious leaders in Iran presumably think that they can work with Hassan Rouhani or the elections would have been manipulated.
They took the groundbreaking step of waiting until the votes had been cast and counted before declaring the result.
This may be indicative of a thawing in the attitude of the regime towards the west. The impact of sanctions on the economy is turning opinion against the regime and that may be a factor.

that is likely, remeber Iran had the protests 2/3 years ago, they quelled them but wonder if they felt another hardliner and they would see another Egypt, Syria, Libya etc ??
