Does the independant in Tower Hamlets have any links with the mayor and/or Respect? Slightly surprised not to see a Repect candidate there... or maybe I'm not. I make no pretence to understand Tower Hamlets.

There wasn't any option for Tower Hamlets as the vacancy arose from disqualification. That automatically calls the byelection and the RO had to schedule it within 35 days which didn't allow a 3 May polling day.

Barking and Dagenham was caused by the resignation of a councillor on the eve of her disqualification (through expiry of leave of absence). Goresbrook is the strongest BNP ward in Barking and Dagenham and their activists would certainly have wanted to have the byelection separately from the Mayoral election; it wouldn't surprise me if they called it.

The Mayor personally nominated the Independent candidate, so yes.

This is Lutfur Rahman's old ward and he has nominated the Independent candidate personally. As for Respect, there are some rumours of a deal in which Respect get a clear run at the Weavers ward by-election on May 6th in return for not standing here.

On the scheduling point, if someone officialy requests a by-election the returning office has to hold it within a certain time frame so it could only be delayed until May 6th if all parties agreed.

At a guess, not much. But there will probably be some 'brand loyalty' and I would not expect the BNP vote to collapse completely even in the absence of a campaign.

The London BNP branch has been very active in this by election, picking up a lot of postal votes on the doors and distributing VOF papers. They have a good chance of winning, hence Hopenothate and the other self-proclaimed ''anti-fascist'' labour-front groups are distributing hundreds of anti-BNP smear leaflets in this ward, as of last week.

UKIP are only standing to stop the BNP also getting a seat and have admitted they have no chance of winning here. Nigel Farage has declared this openly many times, his party will only contest seats to stop the BNP getting in. That's democracy in this country for you...

I know for a fact Hopenothate have supported the UKIP paper candidate in this by election, as it is now a general anti-BNP strategy, to get as many candidates in a By election when the BNP have a high chance of winning.
