There's certainly been long term movement away from Labour in that part of the world (as a consequence of deindustrialisation - something that may have had an unusually significant impact due to unusual settlement patterns - and population movements resulting from the expanding influence of Birmingham and all that) but it's a mistake to get all teleological about that kind of thing. Of course it's also not a great idea to point to a specific result as being a fluke until enough time has gone past to give it proper context or something like that, perhaps written in a clearer style.

A large part of the fall in Labour's vote in 2010 must surely be attributed to the retirement of the sitting and very personally popular MP Tony Wright. Basically, yes.

I suggest that a fact in the long term swing in Cannock if there is one would be the converse of the pro Labour swing in Birmingham. Suburbanisation. You gain from one and lose from the other. Another name might be White Flight.

With the leaks that Greening is moving then Richmond Park & North Kingston is looking a possible good bet.
goldsmith today confirmed he would stand as an Indy if he called one.

(A) The constituency name is just Richmond Park, isn't it? It's only the local Conservative association which adds in North Kingston. (B) I'd imagine Goldsmith standing as an independant would make it very interesting indeed. Might actually become a Goldsmith v LD battle with the Tories pushed into third, but I'll wait until he actually resigns.

I think he would win to be honest and maybe by a large distance.

Conservative candidate selected for Cardiff South and Penarth: Craig Williams, a Cardiff City Councillor for Pentyrch division. He was narrowly defeated in 2008 in Llandaff, but was elected in Pentyrch division in a July 2008 byelection by 12 votes. He was re-elected 2012 with a large swing to the Conservatives.

And if people are wondering why, here's the reason from tomorrow's Daily Telegraph: The Scotland Yard inquiry said funds believed to have been “of a suspicious nature” were paid into current and savings accounts in the name of or linked to Keith Vaz, a minister in the previous Labour government.
Detectives found that over a six-year period, almost £500,000 was apparently deposited in the MP’s accounts — in addition to his salary between 1997 and 2001.
The source of the funds has not been declared publicly and the evidence gathered by police may contradict assurances given by Mr Vaz during an investigation into his finances between 2000 and 2001 carried out by parliament.
The Labour MP has denied any wrongdoing and claims that any money passing through his bank accounts came from the proceeds of property deals. The Metropolitan Police is facing calls to hand evidence it collected to the parliamentary commissioner for standards, who can reopen an inquiry into allegations first made a decade ago.

While no fan of Mr Vaz (in 2001 I was of the opinion that when Martin bell was scrabbling around looking for a seat to be Mr Clean in it should have been Leicester East) I always take newspaper scoops with a pinch of salt especially when it is aimed at political opponents.
