2010 a lot of strong Labour wards saw a higher than average rise in Lib Dem vote (Cleggmania). That has returned whence it came. And yes peobably a bit more besides with party of government having changed. Now if Labour could get those out for the constituency GLA vote and remove the offensive Brian Coleman there might be a few cheers.

appears that the other Darlington seat may have been taken by the Tories, no shock at all when a child sex case is at play

not shocked at all by losing that given the circumstances, shame maybe for the local party but in those cases a kind of public justice is also served

It would also seem, from reading the link above, that the jailed ex-councillor headed a committee responsible for child welfare <shakes head>

this was the Birchills one I mentioned
Conservative Kamran Aftab 764 43.9 +12.9 Labour Richard Worrall 661 37.9 -16.7 BNP Malcolm Moore 90 5.2 +5.2 Liberal Democrat Christine Cockayne 72 4.1 +4.1 Democratic Labour Alan Davies 69 4.0 -2.3 UKIP Elizabeth Hazell 52 3.0 +3.0 Green Paul Booker 34 2.0 -6.1 Majority 103 5.9 Turnout 1,742 19.6 Conservative gain from Labour Swing
and as you can see it was the child abuse stuff that lost us even in the depths of poor labour results

Worth noting that there was also a significant pro-Tory swing in the other Darlington result - but that, again, the circumstances in which the vacancy came about must have significantly aided them.

Circumstances of both by-elections would have helped. Darlington was also one of the councils which is raising council tax - I wonder if this featured rather heavily in the Conservative campaigns?
