As the LDs did not stand last May in the 2 wards making up Waltham Cross and the Conservative vote and Labour vote was well down then it is pretty safe to say most LDs just stayed at home

Looks like Richard was telling it how it was upthread, then - though if so it is a bit mystifying why we didn't make more of an effort

I suspect the biggest issue for Labour was that their most effective local campaigner has been AWOL with health problems and the Tory campaign was huge - managed by the Leader of Herts CC who is bloody good at this kind of thing.

Byelection result @hertscc Waltham Cross division: C 1,389, Lab 837, UKIP 159, L Dem 76. think LD vote suffered a bit, how many propped up the Tories ? or did not vote at all ? Sorry Ian, not the case. Broxbourne simply doesn't have an effective LD presence in areas that would favour them. In WX & Theobalds they don't campaign at all as their support is, if I'm being very kind, extremely limited.

Also bear in mind that in last June's Cheshunt Central by-election (next Borough ward north of WX division) the Lib Dems polled 24 votes....

Another typically mixed week - seem to be having a lot of those lately.
Labour vote is up in percentage terms everywhere except Devon, but they failed to take either marginal which they should have been in with a shout in.
The Conservatives and LDs will be pleased with their respective holds. Both will probably be a little disappointed at West Devon, but given circumstances of election, the winner was not that surprising. Doubt any of the three main parties really bothered about Tendring

But Labour's share in Waltham Cross was down, not only compared with May last year but also compared with May 2010 - it is only up when compared with the abysmal year of 2009

Incumbency can work against as well as for a candidate. I would agree that Nascot Park was probably a tough proposition last time out. Candidates don't move seats unless there is a good reason. Looking ahead though it looks a juicy ward for next time.
The big concern from the WX result though is feed over into borough elections in a few weeks. Of course the elections are a different prospect but with the vagaries of all out elections plus a recent high intensity campaign in the area could make for interesting developments.

I think they need to take a leaf out of Liverpool or Manchester's book when it comes to their communication strategy about the cuts. Prize for the most ironic statement of the morning . . .

Which would be a valid comment if WC was typical of our by-election performances recently. However, it is not......... I am more disappointed in the Brent result, if anything - given how fervently I wish to see the back of Teather

Be interesting to see if the winning Tory candidate in WX is now asked to fight one of the new Borough wards that covers her division (Cheshunt South & Theobalds and Waltham Cross Wards).
She is currently a Rosedale Borough Councillor but as this seat is being subsumed by she is earmarked to stand in Flamstead End.
