One thing to note is that this marks the end of the electoral juggernaut that was the Common Ground alliance between Plaid and the Greens and which was still in force in April’s Grangetown by-election (and appears to still be a grouping on the council). Lee Canning (Ref) and Sam Coates (Grn) both stood in Cardiff East at the General Election (this ward is in Cardiff South & Penarth), with Coates having stood in Gabalfa in 2022. Canning has previously stood for the Senedd for Abloish the Welsh Assembly and for Cardiff Council for the Tories.

Gary Shacklady was the Green candidate for Earley & Woodley (which contains this ward) at the General Election. He stood in Bulmershe & Coronation in May. Jackie Rance was the second Conservative here in May and was formerly cllr for Shinfield South (partly in this new ward) on previous boundaries (elected in 2021). Chris Johnson (LD) is also a former cllr for Shinfield South (elected in 2022) who stood with the other part of that ward in Spencers Wood & Swallowfield in May, failing to win re-election.

The Labour candidate in Cardiff is the daughter of the deceased councillor. (Posted as an observation only)

As for Common Ground, the pact regarding elections is definitely over, it wouldn't surprise me to see the grouping at City Hall remain until 2027 due to the goodwill of the two sitting members (both from the Plaid side of the agreement). The agreement was also the brain child of Rhys ab Owen MS who is no longer a member of Plaid.

The Greens are working hard, what their expectations are I don't know, they were delivering generic surveys in the ward before the former councillor died and have produced a localised leaflet so far ad have been actively canvassing. The three candidates in 2022 in Splott were all from the Greens IIRC. I'm unsure if the Tom Coates who stood then is related to the Sam Coates standing now. Sam is one of the far more active and visible activists they have in Cardiff and has been active since at least 2011 in Cardiff and it wouldn't surprise me to see him top of one of the regional/super constituency lists come 2026.

Will certainly be interesting to see if/what Reform do and how they fare. I'm amazed they've put up someone from The Vale here rather than Cardiff. Their candidate Lee Caning runs a leaflet delivery firm so I assume they will do something, although I've neither seen nor heard of anything yet.
