The best known Handsworth is probably the one in Birmingham, but in the early 20th century Handsworth Urban District could be found in South Yorkshire, between Sheffield and the valley of the River Rother. As well as the area of Handsworth, just south-east of Darnall on the eastern edge of the city, it contained the sizable village of Woodhouse. The Urban District was annexed by Sheffield in the 1920s, and gradually its area has merged into the Sheffield urban area, but both Handsworth and Woodhouse are still very much identifiable communities. Taken together, they are too large to form a single ward but are not close to being large enough for two wards, so for many years what we have had has been a ward containing all of Woodhouse together with part of Handsworth. It was called Handsworth until 2004, when it was renamed as Woodhouse; the areas of Handsworth excluded have changed over the years, with the south-west of the area currently being in Richmond ward, but the basic idea of the ward has not changed.

Woodhouse still has something of a village feel in its centre, but its expansion in the 20th century included a number of council estates, such as the flat-roofed houses of the Badger estate and the low rise flats south of the old village centre. As a result there is still quite a lot of council housing in the area, and in the 2021 census just over a quarter of the households in the ward were socially rented. Some of these areas are quite deprived, with the census area covering part of the village centre and those flats to the south being the fourth most deprived (and 270th most in England) in the city on 2019 figures.

However overall the ward, while generally working class, is not one of the poorest in the city, with much of Handsworth, as well as Woodhouse Mill at the eastern end near Woodhouse station, having rather lower deprivation. Much of the housing here is inter-war or mid 20th century private semi-detached, with some older stone fronted villas. The occupational categories where the ward most stands out as having high proportions are the intermediate categories "secretarial and administrative" and "skilled trades". It does not, by Sheffield standards, have many students, and the proportion with degree level education is also on the low side. It is quite white, especially in Woodhouse; there is a small Asian population in parts of Handsworth, still much lower than in neighbouring Darnall.

The ward has a long history of Labour representation. If we combine Handsworth ward's electoral history before 2004 with Woodhouse's, the last time a party other than Labour had a councillor elected was in Labour's national disaster year of 1968, when the Conservatives briefly took control of Sheffield City Council and they won two seats in Handsworth in a double vacancy election, their second candidate's winning margin being just seven votes. Their loss of a seat in the ward to Labour the following year was one of the gains which allowed Labour to retake control. Handsworth ward was not close to voting Liberal Democrat even in their high water years in Sheffield of 1998 and 1999, though Woodhouse did come quite close to voting UKIP in 2014.

A Labour hold should be the most likely result, but there might be two dangers. The demographics suggest there is some potential for Reform UK, as does that 2014 UKIP challenge. Meanwhile, the last Sheffield by-election in a usually safe Labour ward, in Firth Park in 2021, saw a very strong challenge from the Lib Dems, who, freed from the need to defend their own wards at the same time, came close to taking the seat.

Orgreave is complicated...

The colliery/coking works site is in Rother Vale ward in Rotherham, and now in Rotherham constituency, though it was indeed in Rother Valley until the recent changes. It is now completely unrecognisable, having been subject to opencast mining in the 1990s, then landscaped, and now is being developed as part of the new community called Waverley. The areas in that development have been removed from Orgreave parish, which now consists of just a handful of streets near Woodhouse station which ought to be in Sheffield, and in this ward, but aren't. (One of them has the curious name Hail Mary Drive.)

The name Orgreave however does spread across the railway line which now forms the Sheffield/Rotherham boundary, a little NW of Woodhouse station, and that area is in this ward. If you look at the map on this BBC article about the events there in 1984, you can see that they did spread into areas on the Sheffield side of the boundary.
