Obviously Biden was from Pennsylvania, but who was the last major presidential/vice-presidential candidate to run from Pennsylvania as state of primary affiliation? Arlen Specter? He ran for the Republican nomination in 1995 with a campaign that an American academic called 'brief and futile'.
William Scranton challenged Goldwater in 1964, but lost out.
So you could say that the last serious run was Winfield Scott Hancock the Democratic candidate in 1880 who lost to Garfield by less than 2,000 in the popular vote. Of course Garfield didn't last long in office, being assassinated by a man who thought he should be the American consul in Paris.
Buchanan is the State's only President.

Eisenhower’s home state for his 1956 win was Pennsylvania, having moved his private residence there during his first term. Although it wasn’t where he was brought up and of course he had no previous political career anywhere to speak of |

His father William Scranton was a previous Governor of Pennsylvania. The last time I was in Pennsylvania (well the only time actually) was in 1986 and I picked up a handbill in Philadelphia when Scranton Junior was running for Governor. He lost narrowly to Democrat Bob Casey Senior. Joe Biden was born in Scranton, the home of the Scrantons. This was also where the US version of the Office was set. |
