In a parallel universe, Sanders is running for a second term as President after an FDR-esque first term.

I think in a one to one campaign there would have been too much to hit Sanders with especially with the socialist label. The GOP never really got round to attacking Sanders since Biden was always the frontrunner (aside from the first couple of contests that went wrong for him)

Sanders calls himself a socialist but is policy wise a fairly mainstream social democrat

Sanders calls himself a socialist but is policy wise a fairly mainstream social democrat Maybe so but that’s to do with how the American political spectrum has generally been more the right than other western nations (albeit it has been shifting more left for a few years now). And as always with elections it’s about how effective the attacks are rather than how totally true they are Biden’s status as a well established centrist Democrat helped win over Republicans/conservatives who struggled to put up with Trump and get them to turn out for him. When you look at the small margins in the swing states that was important and I really doubt Sanders could have managed that, bearing in mind that progressives turned out highly for Biden anyway on the basis of stopping Trump so it’s not as if Sanders would have found a lot of new voters either Four years later is obviously a different matter with Biden now having a presidential record and the obvious image of him as an old diminished man

I'm a big Bernie fan but also think his peak was in 2016 and there is a good chance Trump would have beaten him last time, sadly.

Yes. Sanders' best chance was '16 just like Corbyn's best chance was '17. There are lots of weird parallels between those elections held within months of each other.
