I'm starting this for reviews and recommendations.
I'd be very interested in anyone's thoughts on the new Furlong & Jennings effort, called (I think) 'The Changing Electoral Map of England and Wales'.

Interesting they chose to publish that just *before* the election - I suppose an updated edition will appear before too long.

Ah, remember leafing through that in the local library back in the day. There was also a BBC/ITN guide containing the notional 1979 results on the 1983 boundaries.

A Citizen’s Guide to Electoral Reform was a good read. It was in my local Waterstones around the time of the AV referendum (in which I voted No). There are plenty of other books on the subject of electoral reform if that’s your thing; too many to choose from in fact.

Not sure about the selection but where do you draw a line? Hammersmith South, 1949? Sunderland South, 1953? Ealing South, 1958? Bromsgrove, 1971? Manchester Moss Side, 1978?

You are quite correct, but still a bit mystifying why Rochdale this year makes the cut - as opposed to the surely rather more consequential Bradford West in 2012.

Rochdale is one of the more unique by-election results thanks to the circumstances with the Labour suspension of their candidate and David Tully's success.

However in all fairness most of the by-elections in that list definitely deserve to be there-especially those from the 1980s and 2020s. And Iain Dale should know by now the first Eastleigh by-election happened in 1994, not 1993, and that the Greenwich by-election in question happened in 1987, not 1986. He also did not get them in quite the right order-the Carmarthen by-election took place after the Kingston upon Hull North by-election of 1966!

Also, there are a few by-elections that I believe Iain Dale should have included on his list on that post of his on X but did not-such as the Sheffield Attercliffe by-election of 1909.

Cook and Ramsden had a book entitled By-elections in British politics. I had a copy but may have disposed of it (I haven’t unpacked the books yet) in my last move. It wasn’t particularly useful.
