Time to open this up as according to Iran's constitution a Presidential election now has to be held in 50 days.

Let me guess - will the "choice" be between Islamist 1, Islamist 2 and Islamist 3?

Let me guess - will the "choice" be between Islamist 1, Islamist 2 and Islamist 3? The word farce springs to mind.

What chance of Ahmadinejad making a comeback? Given the state of the World right now, the return of the President who wanted to "wipe Israel off the map" feels quite in keeping with the horrendous geopolitics of our time.

He tried to make a comeback in 2021 but his candidacy was rejected by the Guardian Council.

Prominent reformist and former Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Ari Larijani, has applied to run in the election. This is a bit of a surprise as he had previously indicated that he wouldn't bother putting himself forward unless he had a clear steer he wouldn't be barred.
If (big if) he does make it through the vetting process then that would be quite the about turn from the regime, with basically no reformists allowed to stand since the 2021 Presidential Election (inclusive) when Raisi was elected. That includes banning ex-President Hassan Rouhani from running for the Council of Experts back in March.

Saeed Jalili, former chief nuclear negotiator, is also running and some analysts think he is Khamenei's choice.

In any case, Larijani was not allowed to go forward. 6 candidates have been approved, 5 conservatives and 1 reformist: - Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, the current Speaker of Parliament, former Mayor of Tehran and Chief of Police. He was runner up to Hassan Rouhani in the 2013 Presidential election. - Saeed Jalili, the former chief nuclear negotiator. He finished third in the aforementioned 2013 Presidential election. - Alireza Zakani, the current mayor of Tehran. It has been rumoured that he will ultimately withdraw and back Jalili. - Mostafa Pourmohammadi, who has headed various ministries in the past, and was reportedly a key figure in the 1988 mass executions of prisoners, but has presented himself as a somewhat less doctrinaire conservative. - Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi, the Head of the Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs, and former party spokesperson for the Front of Islamic Revolution Stability, which has been called Iran's most hardline party. - Masoud Pezeshkian, the sole reformist allowed to go forward, a former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and the Minister of Health under Khatami.

Voting for this is tomorrow. Zakani and Hashemi have dropped out, whilst Pourhommadi will receive barely any votes. Pezeshkian, Jalili and Ghalibaf are in a close-ish 3 way race, though most polls have them finishing in that order. Higher turnout will likely be better for Pezeshkian.
