Looking forward to what - should be - a tight contest. And that is how you do expectations management. The only tight part of the contest might be whether Labour win on 1st preferences or require transfers... or did you mean tight between the SNP and Conservatives for second? As things turned out - less than 20 votes between the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish Family Party.

Lab +8.3% SNP -12% Con -0.1% LD -0.5% SFP new A 10 point swing against the SNP isn’t too bad for them given the circumstances imo. Puts most of the central belt in play but on a 2 Party basis still keeps Glasgow West, Edinburgh East and the Paisley seats in the SNP column along with the likes of Cumbernauld/Kilmarnock/East Kilbride. Need to wait and see if it plays out like that, but, along with Hillhead, might be some information that it’s not as bad for the SNP in the central belt as some polling suggests?

Its one result, in what was a notably stronger than average Labour area in 2022. And their win this time was at the upper end of expectations on here.

Is there any obvious reason why Kilwinning has become so strong for Labour in the past 15 years?

Compared with May 2017 it represents a 12% swing SNP to Labour.
